Sermon Transcript: The Last Sunday after the Epiphany March 6, 2011 The Rev. R. Allan McCaslin Readings: Exodus 24:12-18; Psalm 2; 2 Peter 1:16-21; Matthew 17:1-9
Jesus came and touched them, saying, “Get up and do not be afraid.” I speak to you in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen.
Every once in a while, we receive an engraved invitation in the mail with four initials at the bottom: R.S.V.P. an abbreviation of the French, “répondez s'il vous plaît.” Literally, it begs us to respond: please answer this invitation, so that we can prepare a place for you. And if we don’t R.S.V.P., we are not guaranteed a place at the table should we decide to attend.
I cannot help but notice that our scripture readings throughout this Season of the Epiphany have been filled with invitations to explore how Christ’s light illumines our paths so that we engage more fully into our life in Christ and allow God’s good news to transform us as God’s people. Yet, none of these invitations include an R.S.V.P. God’s people are simply invited and a place prepared for us for whenever and wherever we choose to respond to God.
